Marietta
Power Automates Work Orders, Scheduling,
and Dispatching with CrewManager
SANTA MONICA, CA. May 5, 2009.
Marietta Power has successfully automated its
work orders and crew scheduling with the
CrewManager software.
“Our goal was to make our work process
paperless,” says Marietta Power Director Tom
Bell. “With a financial and inventory system
called HTE and an engineering design tool called
UtilityCenter in use for some time, we needed a
system to manage work orders and crew scheduling
in order for us to go fully electronic.
CrewManager was chosen to make this a reality.”
A new job for Marietta Power is entered into a
job template in CrewManager. The engineers
design the job in UtilityCenter, giving the job
a start date in CrewManager. The warehouse
receives the materials list from UtilityCenter
and the start date from CrewManager. If all of
the material is not available, the warehouse
uses CrewManager to indicate the date material
can be staged and eventually released to the
job.
The Operations department views the job in a
visual timeline in CrewManager pre-assigned to
crew groups such as Overhead and Underground,
and schedules crews to tasks.
Marietta Power’s service crews also receive and
process service orders in their trucks using
CrewManager. “Our crews used to have to come in
to the office every morning to collect paper
work orders and then return again in the evening
to submit the completed orders,” says Hulet
Norvell, Utility Applications Network Analyst at
Marietta Power. “Now with CrewManager loaded on
their toughbooks, the crews receive their
service orders directly in the field over our
cellular mobile network. When they’ve completed
the job in CrewManager, the data is relayed back
wirelessly to the dispatchers who close out the
job.”
Engineering Manager and Project Leader Art
Miscally says: “Our engineering, operations, and
warehouse personnel are now working within a
visible electronic loop from job initiation to
job closeout. Where we previously needed a lot
of paper and phone calls to manage a single job,
our teams now coordinate easily in a paper-free
environment.”
“We are pleased with our implementation,” he
adds. “We may look to use CrewManager’s
integration module to achieve further benefits
to our automation process.”
Created by the City of
Marietta in 1906, community-owned Marietta Power
is one of the largest municipal electric
utilities in Georgia, providing low cost
electric power to over 45,000 customers in
Marietta and Cobb counties.
HTE is a SunGard product, and UtilityCenter is a
Trimble Navigation product.
CrewManager is a work management system uniquely
built around a core crew scheduling engine.
Leading city utilities use CrewManager to
generate or import work orders, estimate labor
hours, create materials lists, schedule crews,
dispatch jobs, manage time keeping, and view
reports and metrics.
